What is a Ringworm (Alopecia Areata)? Ringworm Causes and Treatment

Alopecia areata, also known as “barber’s itch”, is an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the hair follicles, causing them to shrink or stop producing hair.

There are various symptoms and signs of alopecia areata, including itching before hair loss or nails that become brittle or pitted. But the most common symptom of this disease is obvious hair loss.

Causes of Alopecia Areata

Unfortunately, the exact cause of this disease is still unknown. If you are suspicious about the symptoms, it is always recommended to consult a dermatologist to get a proper diagnosis.

Even though the causes are unknown, there are some factors that may contribute to the disease;

  • Genetics
  • Physical or emotional stress
  • Infections
  • Vitamin deficiency
  • Other autoimmune diseases

It is important to note that Alopecia areata is not a contagious disease. It cannot be passed from one person to another by coming into contact with them.

Treatment Options for Alopecia Areata

Just like any other disease, treatment for alopecia areata also depends on the severity of the disease and the individual’s overall health. The most common treatments include

  • Topical applications: Corticosteroids can help stop the condition. It is also common to apply corticosteroid injections.
  • Minoxidil: This medication is commonly used to treat male pattern baldness, along with alopecia areata.
  • Immunotherapy: Some of the scientific research on the disease shows that it is caused by genetics. Immunotherapy, which involves sensitizing agents, stimulates the immune system and helps for treatment.
  • Medications: In severe cases, prescribed systemic medications may help.
  • Lifestyle changes: Stress management techniques and a healthy diet can help manage the symptoms of the disease.
